Cryptic Scholar intake is open

The Trials are open.
The Tree is reading.

Cryptic clues reward the mind that reads what stays hidden, and anyone can learn to read that way. Off every chart sits an island where reading is the local physics, where the right word rearranges matter and wordplay is weather. The Trials wait there, in a Tower rooted in the World Tree. The Tree has kept a few solvers longer than they planned. You'll be fine. Probably.

The Tower is the Trial, a climb of clues. The World is the island, where the locals teach you its physics. First cryptic ever? The field guide takes twenty minutes, and the Tree will wait. It's had practice.

Every clue tells you how to read it.

A cryptic clue is a small riddle that carries its own answer: half of it defines the answer, the other half builds it through wordplay, and the number at the end, the (5), counts its letters. The surface reading is a decoy. The field guide teaches you every trick before you set foot in the Tower, and the islanders in the World teach the same tricks in person. "The island likes to test new arrivals before it says hello properly," the Dock Keeper says. He means it as a welcome.

🧩

Read the Clue

A clue arrives in your terminal. One half defines the answer. The other half builds it, letter by letter, while pretending to be an innocent sentence.

02
🔍

Read It Again

Every clue is written to be misread once. Read it again: one of its words is an instruction. Follow it and the answer gives itself up.

📡

Climb the Tower

Each solved clue carries you higher up the Tower, from the Whispering Woods toward the Cryptic Void. The higher you climb, the less the sentences behave.

Eight ways a sentence lies to you.

Real cryptic technique, the same wordplay the great setters use, and every clue plays fair: one definition, one working parse, nothing wasted. Solve a clue and the game shows you exactly how it worked. On the island, this is physics.

🔀

Anagrams

"Confused saint leaves mark (5)". The indicator is the word that confesses: something here is mixed up. Shuffle the letters of "saint" until a word meaning "mark" falls out.

ask the Town Crier
🔍

Hidden Words

"Pet found in 'the scatter' (3)". The answer is already on the page, sitting whole inside the clue, hoping you read past it. Look again.

the Letter Fox knows
🔁

Reversals

"Cooking vessel flipped for a quick sleep (3)". Some words are other words walking backwards. Find the vessel, turn it around, and read what it was hiding.

ask the Dock Keeper
✂️

Deletions

"Almost there (4)". A word gives up a letter, from its head, its tail, or its heart, and the survivor is your answer. The indicator tells you where to cut.

🎯

Letter Selection

"Even stripes can be formal wear (3)". The clue points at particular letters: firsts, lasts, evens, odds. Take only the ones it names, in order.

ask the Barista
🔊

Homophones

"The number sounded not against it (4)". This trick happens out loud: the answer sounds right and spells different. Say the clue, then check the letters.

ask the Star Watcher
⚖️

Double Definitions

"Mighty fine (5)". The shortest clues on the island: two meanings sharing one word, with nothing between them to warn you. Catch the pivot.

ask the Head Librarian
📦

Charades & Containers

"Company encountered celestial visitor (5)". Charades lay parts end to end: company gives CO, encountered gives MET, and a comet assembles. Containers slot one part inside another instead. The Tower Guardian calls both recognized infiltration techniques.

ask the Croc

Every solve shows its full parse, and the clues outgrow the tutorial fast. When they stop being easy, look for the dragon. He hoards the hard ones.

Climb the Root Trial.

The Tower is the Root Trial. It stands where a root of the World Tree breaks the surface, and you climb its living wood, every solved clue a foothold. Read the wordplay right and the Tree lets you pass. Read it wrong and you stay. And watch the ones who help you climb. Some of them look like they enrolled once themselves. None of them can say why they still come.

"Scholars enter the hollow tree and rise an EduTect or fall from the skyward boughs like the Icari they would become."
