The world of cryptics rewards the mind that reads what stays hidden. Scholars who went in before you went deep. Some did not come back. Learn the craft in the World, then face the Root Trial in the Tower. Solve the clue, or the Tree keeps you.
No tutorials. No hand-holding. You see a cryptic clue, you solve it. That's the game.
A cryptic clue appears in your terminal. Every clue has a definition half and a wordplay half. Your job is to untangle them.
Name the clue type (anagram, hidden word, charade, container) and solve it before the timer runs out.
Each clue you solve carries you deeper into the World Tree, from the Whispering Woods down toward the Cryptic Void.
Real cryptic clue techniques. The same wordplay professional cryptic crosswords use, built for speed.
"Confused saint leaves mark (5)". The letters get shuffled. Spot the indicator word, rearrange the fodder, and find the answer that fits the definition.
Core Mechanic"Pet found in 'the scatter' (3)". The answer hides in plain sight inside the clue text. Find the contiguous sequence that matches the definition.
Core Mechanic"Mighty fine (5)". Two different definitions for the same word, placed side by side with no wordplay. Pure vocabulary test.
Core Mechanic"Almost there (4)". A word loses a letter or two to form the answer. "Almost," "nearly," and "cut short" are your signals.
Core MechanicOne word placed inside another. In "He's in shelter," you put HE inside SHELTER to form a new word. The indicator tells you what goes where.
AdvancedWords strung together like a chain. You solve each part of "Short time abroad (6)" on its own, then combine them into the answer.
AdvancedThe Tower is the Root Trial, the hollow World Tree itself. You climb down through its living wood, and each clue you solve carries you deeper. Read the wordplay right and the Tree lets you pass. Read it wrong and you stay.
"Scholars enter the hollow tree and rise, or fall from the skyward boughs like the Icari they would become."
Weekly rankings. Solve faster, climb higher. This resets every Monday at 00:00 UTC.
